Hi, I’m Rob – the lead tutor and founder of the Music Sound Academy.

I started teaching music when I was just 15, after being invited to tutor at the Saturday music school I attended in London. I was studying piano, composition, and clarinet at the time, and that early opportunity sparked a lifelong passion for helping others grow through music.

Since then, I’ve written music for over 25 years and composed three musicals, some of which have enjoyed successful runs in London’s West End. Music has always been at the heart of what I do, and I’ve been lucky to learn from some amazing experiences – including winning the Music of the Millennium competition in 1999, which gave me the chance to meet Sir George Martin, legendary producer of The Beatles. I’ve also spent many summers at Dartington Summer Music School, where I’ve continued to learn, collaborate, and be inspired.

When I moved to Edinburgh over a decade ago, I set up this academy with the aim of offering personalised, high-quality tuition. Since then, we’ve worked with hundreds of clients, and during the Covid pandemic, many turned to us not just to keep learning, but to bring structure and focus into their week – something that really supported their wellbeing during a difficult time.

I believe that learning music should be tailored to each person – challenging, creative, and genuinely enjoyable. I use a range of techniques to help my clients grow in confidence and skill, while keeping lessons fun and engaging. Although piano and composition are my core focus, I’ve also brought in fantastic tutors for voice, guitar and other subjects when needed.

We’re a small, flexible academy, and I take pride in putting each client at the centre of what we do. I’m especially passionate about supporting adult learners online, helping them develop in ways that really suit their lives.
